How do I know what search terms to use?

One of the trickiest parts of finding resources is formulating a question and identifying key concepts. Once you identify key concepts, you can start to build your search and select search terms. Most clinicians use a tool called PICO to help identify key concepts and formulate their questions.

What does PICO stand for?

P - Population

I - Intervention

C- Comparison

O - Outcome

For example: ‘In patients with recurrent furunculosis, do prophylactic antibiotics, compared to no treatment, reduce the recurrence rate?’

P - Patients with recurrent furunculosis

I - Prophylactic antibiotics

C- no treatment

O - reduction in furunculosis recurrence rate
